"Oil-free, sugar-free and low-salt, can food really taste good this way?” some visitors questioned. In response, Tzu Chi Food Farmacy volunteers smiled and explained, "We use the natural flavours of ingredients and preserve the essence of the food, making it both healthy and delicious!"

On the morning of 26 April 2025, Tzu Chi Food Farmacy was invited to participate in the Active Ageing Carnival 2025 jointly organised by Ang Mo Kio GRC, Kebun Baru SMC and Yio Chu Kang SMC. From their booth set up at the campus of ITE College Central in Ang Mo Kio, the team promoted a whole-food plant-based diet through a colourful display of fresh fruits and vegetables, sugar-free healthy snacks for tasting, and information of cooking classes to advocate for a healthy and environmentally friendly dietary concept to the public.

Diet is key to preventing “three highs”

Volunteers arrived early to set up the booth, displaying an array of colourful fresh fruits and vegetables including passionfruit, cherry tomatoes, green apples, red bell peppers and orange cauliflowers. The visual appeal attracted many residents to stop to admire and make enquiries.

The volunteers also served sugar-free oat sesame cookies to the visitors while explaining the importance of a low-sugar, low-salt diet in preventing chronic diseases.

Tzu Chi Food Farmacy has long promoted a whole-food plant-based diet, emphasising natural cooking methods that are oil-free, sugar-free and low in salt, making it particularly suitable for the middle-aged and elderly population. As we age, our metabolism slows, and poor dietary habits may lead to health issues such as the “three highs”, specifically high blood pressure, high cholesterol level, and high blood sugar, which can adversely affect our cardiovascular health.

During the event, volunteers also promoted plant-based cooking classes conducted by professional chefs to encourage the public to learn healthier cooking methods.

The public is invited to take up the 21-Day Healthier Me Challenge to build a healthy lifestyle together

To encourage patients with “three highs” to take action to improve their health, volunteers actively promoted the upcoming Healthier me 21-Day Healthier Me Challenge starting on 30 June 2025. We hope that people will initiate changes to their body and lifestyle habits through 21 days of dietary practice. Many individuals showed great interest in the event and left their contact information on-site, wanting to learn more and take part.

Scientific research has indicated that a plant-based diet is rich in dietary fibre, vitamins and minerals, and also reduces cholesterol, calories and saturated fats in the body which helps to reduce the risk of chronic diseases. Tzu Chi Food Farmacy aims to raise awareness of the importance of healthy eating through community activities and encourage more people to take small steps towards change and sow seeds to reap long-term happiness and health.
